Custom Disc Dyeing

Postby FarUnderPar » Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:38 am

What's up guys. Myself and another guy are beginning to experiment with dyeing discs. We've got some pretty cool designs and ultimately would like to sell them in the distant future. Unfortunately, their is very little market research available on this sector. What I am wanting from you guys is some input.
For example...
Would you purchase dyed discs?
How much would you realistically pay for a dyed disc?
If you had the option between a dyed disc and a regular stamped disc for the SAME price, how often would you choose the dyed disc over the stamped?
What designs would you prefer on a disc?

Any other input is gladly welcomed.

I may be the only one who feels this way, but I couldn't care less about what my disc looks like. If everything else was equal I might choose a disc that had a cool stamp or design on it, but I wouldn't pay extra. (As a matter of fact, lately I've been buying X-out discs, which would be a good deal for you guys if you are going to dye some and resell. You can shave a couple of bucks off your cost that way.)

Right on, I hope other people feel differently. hehe. I've been buying X-outs too, gottagogottathrow.com has a whole section dedicated to x-outs, huge selection.

thanks for the input.

check out ebay for dyed discs to get an idea of what people are buying them for and what kind of dyes people are doing.

I'm one that likes a good looking disc. But the disc has to be a good disc first. If price was the same, I'd pick a good dye job over a regular stamp. I would maybe pay A LITTLE more for a dye job if its a good one that I like. But at times it can be a function of how much free money I have at a given time. Lately I've spent a lot on discs, so right now I'm less likely to spend more to get a better looking disc. But if you can come up with some good designs, I think you can sell them. Even if you don't sell a lot locally, sell your dye jobs online. If they are good, people will buy them.

Just as far as designs go, I generally only make something that someone wants. I don't know that it would be a good idea spending alot of time and effort on something like that if your not sure youve got a buyer, its already not going to be much profit if any.

As far as dyeing discs goes i've had quite a bit of experience with them and have figured out many different techniques. Now, i'm not going to just out an out show you how I do everything but i'd be more than glad to bounce ideas back and forth. if youve been experimenting since you last posted here i'm sure you got some good stuff so far.

Discs that i've done so far can be found http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q132 ... man/discs/

Hey Jeremy, which kinds of Discraft plastic are good to use for doing dyes on? I've got a design in my mind that I might at some point be interested in trying to talk you into making for me. But I was curious if Discraft was like Innova in that the base plastic stinks for doing dyes. I would want to use a Force, but it seems that it's hard to find a good white (which is what I'd want most) disc except in X or D.

I don't have alot of experience with dye'ing discraft. I did do a buzzz once with several colors and it took pretty well was a FLX plastic i believe. You can generally tell by the texture of a disc if it'll dye well or not.. if it feels anything like DX then chances are it won't take well
